Trekking Douro Wine Region
Overview
This route starts at Peso da Régua along the mythical Douro River which we will cross through the old railway bridge now transformed into pedestrian.
From here we follow vineyards along the Varosa river valley and along the way we will find Roman bridges, impressive gorges dug in granite, Roman roads and the breathtaking Varosa dam with breathtaking views.
We pause to eat typical food of the region and taste the famous sparkling of Raposeira
Converging to the valley of the Balsemão river, we will find what is considered the oldest church in Europe with vestiges of many epochs.
Finally we arrived in Lamego the pearl of the Alto Douro, a city that is an open-air museum. Here we make a visit to the Cathedral of Lamego and then climb the staircase of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. From above the gaze can extend through the vastness of the Douro valley and contemplate the Marão on the other side.
At the end, we tasted the delicious ham of Lamego and the Lamego bread accompanied by an excellent Port wine.
